kaleidoscope's mission statement:
kaleidoscope free speech zone is an arts venue dedicated to creating the space and opportunity for local, national and international artists of all types to present their work. kaleidoscope provides an accessible physical space for presentation at no charge to the artists. kaleidoscope also prioritizes community involvement with regular participation in collaborative community arts events, provides a venue for fundraising activities and encourages youth and minority development, presentation and participation in the arts. I was flown over to Munster, Germany to dee jay the Volcom Circa Bergfest contest on Saturday July 16th 2011 and made it there by the hair of my chinny chin chin! (Thanks KVR!!!!)

The BergFest bowl contest was pretty rad overall, it did have it's lagging parts, though like the set up for the cross country race and bad sound (like most contests) but the skating was ripping!

Ben Hatchell showed them where hot skating originates, (in the states cuz!!) and ripped heavily! (Next year I think they need to get Josh Mattson, Brad McLain, Raven Tershay and the other 11 year old contest mind blowers in there to step it up! There was no sign of Big Ben Shroeder as advertised.)

I got to see my Santa Cruz bro Emanuel Guzman and make party with him all day and later at the after party! Chuck Treece stopped by the dj booth and McRad really ripped hard for their set! Later at the after party I got kinda gypped on my set, I played like twenty minutes and the other dudes were kinda buster-ing me out. I told them they would not get treated like that if they came to Nor Cal. So I played my eight records or whatever, people are jumping,having a swell time, Eman is yelling play some

P Funk!! and I would have but the dj dude goes, 'last record, yah'. Oh well, no more after party stories from the dee jay booth, although there was a beer refrigerator below the turntables aka no need for drink ticky's!!

Fast forward to setting up shop in Cologne with J Hay the main man behind Confusion Magazine, Hoax clothing and just tightening up the underground skate scene dude in Cologne!

He is friends with Wasted Box skate shop and all over town he knows the spots to get the 1 euro spanish sandwich or where to set up an insta gig at a kiosk. Everyone I met was super cool, I was stoked to play my music to them and they appreciated that I had come a long way to show Supercharged and tell stories about Tim Brauch.

Stereo Wonderland was a perfect venue for the event. The bartender was wearing a Bl'ast shirt so it was pretty much on from the git go! I made a short introduction about the movie then played a short set, the sound was excellent and Roger from the spermbirds let me put some heavy strings on his acoustic, Peer the sound guy and Martin the owner made sure I was happy with the sound after a great soundcheck. We had them play an old Concussion skate video over me while I was playing. It seems like my set went superfast, but people dug my tunes and I felt very comfortable playing for them at that venue. I saw that Eddie Spaghetti from the Supersuckers was gonna play there and got stoked, because I know Tim used to love them and the Supersuckers used to sleep on my couches back in the day maaan!

After putting up posters all over that beautiful city, dodge speeding cars, barking cats, almost eating it every time I got on a bike,and doing a radio interview you would think I would be beat, but I was supercharged just like everyone else in the place and after the movie played I dee jayed unitl daylight with my new bud deejay/bartender pal Ralph 'Apple Juice', he would call it when the head on my beer was gone, 'What's that Ray?? Apple Juice?? but then I shut him the hell up when I played The Gits! He was like what the fuck is this rad shit?? You know it!! the gits. pretty much played him the whole album 'Frenching the Bully'. all hits!

after the show this dude came up to me super stoked, his name is Merlin, a rad skater/musician learns hella quick, hella friendly, he is my bro, already did one gig with him! he wins the spirit of Tim Brauch award I gave him my eagle hat!

I enjoyed my time in Cologne alot with all the artsy stuff, old green buildings, great people, greater beer! hahaha and support/friendship! I can't wait to go back!!

Art Film & Music in San Jose

Art'N'Soul is a night I started @ the Voo Doo Lounge last year featuring live art and music. Lately I have been bringing in a 1/4 pipe skateboard ramp (with the help from my bud Aron 'Arrow' Arno and his strong back,stronger language and big truck.) Local skater/artist 'Noggin' gets a crew together to shred-rip it and I named 'em 'NOGS DOGS' cuz they are the gnar skate dogs from the downtown SJ area. I book the artists and entertainment for the night and try to keep it skate related. If I can, I get a new skateboard video in on the night too, so we can have fun all night long.

So the next Art'N'Soul is titled 'Modern Living' as a tip of the hat to San Jose Mod legends, THE ODD NUMBERS. The music of the band goes back to The New Deal and Santa Cruz skateboard videos from the early nineties and was heard around the world touching many skaters ears and hearts.

Two of the skaters the music mesmerized are NILTON NEVES (Santa Cruz Skateboards) and ZAROSH EGGLESTON (Platypus Skateboards). Nilton heard the music in Sao Paulo,Brazil and Zarosh enjoyed it in Monterey,California. I had an idea of putting all of these talented people under one roof for one night of skateboarding, live art and skating by Zarosh, a self portrait photo display by Brazilian Nilton Neves (plus a dj set and skating!!), dee jay sets by myself Ray Stevens II/ DJ RS2 and DJ COCO (Calm'n'Punk) and as a special treat a screening of the new Emerica skate video STAY GOLD. (vid starts @ 9!!)

For those of you who missed out on RS2 Solid Sound and “Supercharged: The Life and Times of Tim Brauch” last Friday at Edge of the World; sorry about ya, because it was awesome. The old footage of Tim and interviews from those close to him made it easy to see how amazing he was. The movie is rad. Rock music, skating, grown men on tiny bikes, and dog bites closed out the night. Big thanks to RS2 Solid Sound for making the trip to Missoula. Those guys rock. Also, I think they may have a new #1 fan in Missoula, unless Herb skipped town and is fallowing the tour.

Volunteers Wanted!

The 12TH ANNUAL TIM BRAUCH MEMORIAL SKATEBOARD CONTEST in conjunction with SESSIONS is looking for volunteers to work at this weekend event. We are looking for people who can be our parking attendants, work the raffles, and help with set-up and take-down. The contest is being held on Saturday, October 2nd at the Scotts Valley Skate Park in Scotts Valley and on Sunday, October 3rd at the Lake Cunningham Regional Skate Park in San Jose. This contest is part of the World Cup of Skateboarding and is bound to bring out the legends and the pros of skateboarding, as well as draw big crowds. This is a great volunteer opportunity!
A little about the contest…

Tim Brauch, a Sessions team rider, was always true to his roots as a skateboarder and possessed a positive attitude that did nothing less than inspire friends, family, and the community around him. Tim’s untimely passing in 1999 at the age of 25, led Sessions to create the Tim Brauch Memorial Fund, which donates 100% of its funds towards skateboard park development and scholarships.

Tim Brauch is rad. I saw him skate in California when I was a teenager on that 8 footer in San Jose. Later that night I broke my board. The next day Dave Nelson took me to Rory's mini and I skated it with Kimo. Before we went to the mini I had to go to a shop around the corner and get a new deck. The Eagle has landed in Japan.
Konichiwa Tim friends and fans, I'm in Ibaraki with Zarosh setting up for the premiere of Supercharged at the Advance Distribution center. We've been skating and helping them build on their cement Skatepark at Advance.
The BMC Japan has really set us up here and giving us the red carpet treatment.
We drove to Tokyo last night to meet Jason Adams and see his art show, that was wild. Lots of Jason fans showed up to get their photo with him all night long at the Heshdawgz skate shop.
C.B. The owner had a he'll of a time trying to kick everyone out at the end of the night, the last thing I saw was Jason crushing a beer can on his number one Fan Kenji, beers flying and the lights going out.
Anyhows Japan rules, and we'll also be showing Supercharhed next weekend at Maru's Bridge skateshop somewhere in North Japan next weekend, stay tuned for photos of Zarosh's insane skate stunts, photos of the countryside, and the Japanese Tim fans.

This first image is a prototype design for before ESTE, Tim, Joel, & Salman wanted to use 'Talon' but that was the name of a car so they chose 'ESTE' instead. For all those who attended the San Jose event last night "Rite on!" We had a successful Tim Brauch style art /photo/ film show last night. Some folks really came out of the woodworks. I got to meet Steve Douglas of New Deal, that was great. Zarosh busted out some copies of the 1993 Thrasher Magazine with Tim on the cover, that was something else.There were many highlights of the eve; RS2 SOLID SOUND band was on fire, we watched Skate Youth Super-8 film, and the Brauch's were in attendance to name a few. The art and photos of Tim were Solid, I appreciated all the comrodery and artist collective compilation, must of been 10 different artist involved. I'd like to thank them all. We raised over $1,000 last night at the Blank Club. "The future looks bright!" , as Tim would say. Next stop Japan! -Pete To answer your question, the DVD will be available in June.

FOR what seems like an epoch, the city of San Jose has thrived as a skateboard mecca. People from all over the world have flocked here to congregate and shred. Folks like Steve Caballero and Rick Blackheart originally helped make the city's scene famous decades ago.

In 1999, a more recent legend, Tim "Beans" Brauch, passed away unexpectedly from a sudden cardiac arrest. Part of a new generation that preserved San Jose's rep as a skating capital, he was the best in the world when he died at 25, and he left a legacy that is only getting stronger as each year goes by.

Last year, filmmaker Pete Koff debuted a documentary on Brauch, titled, Supercharged: The Life and Times of Tim Brauch. It features numerous interviews with friends and family, unseen footage of Brauch skateboarding, stories of world travel and an exploration of the legend he left behind. The dude literally had friends across the globe.

Next Tuesday, a high-octane fundraising hoedown will explode at the Blank Club, an institution frequented by many of Brauch's fellow skaters and drinking friends. It will be a four-pronged assault on the senses: (1) Brand new footage from the upcoming DVD release will project on the wall for at least half an hour; (2) an art show including work by Jai Tanju, Lance Dalgart and Aaron Jones will grace the other walls; (3) Supercharged Eagle custom skateboards will be raffled off; and (4) a performance by RS2 Solid Sound will rock the house.

According to anyone who was close to Brauch, he made friends very easily. He was just an all-round likeable dude.

"As good as he was on the board, he was a thousand times better as a person and a friend," Tanju told me last year. "He had this infectious laugh and a slightly mischievous way to have a good time that made you want to jump on whatever boat he was on."

The stories are endless, as Brauch crisscrossed the globe and befriended skateboarders on several continents. His influence was long-lasting. There's even a pub in Australia with his personalized mug.

"He was always traveling to far-off places," Tanju said. "Germany for a demo, Japan for a contest, Spain for a tour, and so on. Towards the end, it seemed like he was always traveling alone, which he didn't mind because to him it was all an adventure. What would happen? Who would he meet this time? With every trip came stories and a lot of new-found friends. I still meet people from his travels who he made a huge impact on, not as a skater but more a component of fun and friendship."

Longtime San Jose musician and skater Ray Stevens II agreed: "Besides Tim being just an incredible skateboarder, he was just an incredible high-energy person that was just amazing," he said. "Anybody who crossed paths with him caught that. He was seriously the happiest guy I've ever known."

Along with his band RS2 Solid Sound, Stevens helped organize much of the music for Supercharged, including the theme song, which goes a little something like this: "Tim Brauch we'll remember to live each day like you did/ The smile on your face, your style and your grace/ The legacy you left we'll never forget."

All of the folks in RS2 Solid Sound were either friends of Tim's, they knew of him, or are skaters themselves. Other bands featured in the movie include local '80s skate punk heroes The Faction and Los Olvidados, plus more recent bands like the Shitkickers. "Basically, just a lot of the local music Tim liked," said Stevens.

In just the time since the film debuted last year, there have been new custom Supercharged decks, T-shirts and sweatshirts. The film went on to premiere in several other cities, with the DVD to be released in a few months.

"We just want to make sure people remember Tim," said Stevens. "And I just want to do everything I can, musicwise, to at least represent that. As much as this project was great to work on, it's also really sad because we miss him a lot. Hopefully this movie will end up on PBS or somewhere where kids can really learn about him. Pete went a long way to make sure there wasn't too much cussing or stories about partying or whatever. Because Tim is a legend. He really is."
